Gila River Indian Community

 

Our host hotel, as well as many of the events are located within the Gila River Indian Community.

 

The community is an alliance of two tribes: Akimel O'odham (Pima) and the Pee Posh (Maricopa).

Established in 1859, it is the largest reservation in the Phoenix area and covers more than 600 square miles.

 

The following attractions are all located within the Gila River Indian Community.

Wild Horse Pass Hotel and Casino  This is our host hotel.  Click the link for information on the hotel and casino.

Lone Butte Casino You have several options when it comes to gaming.  Try your luck at the sister property, Lone Butte Casino.   It's located just 3 miles away.

Firebird International Raceway  Located on 445 acres, this facility features a road course, two test tracks and a quarter mile NHRA certified drag strip.  A 120 acre lake provides a 2.4 mile oval raceway for drag and circle boats.  Check out Friday and Saturday night drag racing and "Run What Ya Brung".  Our track event will be held here on Friday 09/21/2011.

Bondurant School of High Performance Driving  Are you an aspiring racer, want to improve your driving skills, or just want to have incredible fun go- karting?  Then check out this 60 acre purpose built racing facility located next to Firebird International Raceway.

Rawhide Western Town  A true taste of the Old West.  Rawhide offers a Steakhouse and Saloon, unique shopping, gun fights, western shows, burro rides, gold panning and more.  We have a dinner event planned here on Thursday evening.

Whirlwind Golf Club  Located at Wild Horse Pass, Whirlwind Golf Club offers two 18 hole courses: Devil's Claw and Cattail.

Aji Spa  Aji, in the Pima language means "sanctuary".  Aji offers the only authentic Native American spa menu in existence.   Located at the Sheraton at Wild Horse Pass.

Huhugam Heritage Center  The Huhugam Heritage Center is a place that tells the stories of the history, culture, and language of the peoples of the Gila River Indian Community and honors the ancient Huhugam.

Scenic Drives:

 

South Mountain Park  Located at 10919 S. Central Avenue, Phoenix.  The park encompasses over 16,000 acres and is the largest municipal park in the country.  South Mountain Park offers winding roads, incredible views of the surrounding Phoenix area from 2300 feet, hiking, mountain biking, and horse back riding.  From I-10 going west, exit Baseline Road, turn left, go to Central Avenue and turn left.

 

 

Sedona, AZ  Located 120 miles north of Phoenix, Sedona is a must see.  Sedona is known for its spectacular red sandstone rock formations and stunning Oak Creek Canyon.  We will be providing a guided tour to Sedona.

Tortilla Flat, AZ  Located 52 miles east of Phoenix.  The scenic drive to Tortilla Flat offers beautiful desert views of the Superstition Mountains.  The road climbs and descends and has switchback after switchback.

Once there, enjoy a bite to eat at the restaurant and browse the gift shop.  We will offer a guided tour to Tortilla Flat.

Phoenix and Area Attractions:

Nissan Test Facility  Nissan will be conducting an exclusive tour of this fascinating test facility for convention goers.  Nissan will also provide a skid pad for our Autocross event, which will be held on Saturday 9/22/2012.  The test facility is a 3000 plus acre, high security compound located approximately 25 miles south of Phoenix.  This is Nissan's only proving grounds located in the United States.  The test facility is closed to the general public.  You must be a registered convention goer in order to attend this event!

Desert Botanical Gardens  Established over 70 years ago, the Desert Botanical Gardens consist of 145 acres, 65 of which are under cultivation.  The garden has over 20,000 species.  The focus is on native flora, with special emphasis on succulents and cacti.

The Phoenix Zoo and Papago Park  The largest non-profit zoo in the country.  125 acres devoted to animal exhibits and trails.  The zoo is located in Papago Park, which is notable for its red sandstone geological formations.

Old Town Scottsdale  Unique shopping with a historic western flare.  Shop for the perfect souvenir or cool off with ice cream at the Sugar Bowl.

Downtown Tempe / ASU  Downtown Tempe is home to Arizona State University and the Sun Devils.  Mill Avenue offers a unique urban experience with shopping, dinning and great night life.

Phoenix Art Museum  A focal point for art and culture in Arizona.

The Heard Museum The world's premier destination for learning about American Indian arts and culture.

Taliesin West  Built in 1937, Taliesin West was the personal winter home of Frank Lloyd Wright.  It also served as his studio and architectural campus.  The School of Architecture still operates on this site and tours are available.

Arizona Wing of the Commemorative Air Force  Home of the B-17 Sentimental Journey. Along with the B-17, the Arizona Wing maintains and flies several WWII era aircraft.  The museum has a variety of aircrafts on display, as well as a gift shop.

Casa Grande Ruins  The "Great House" was built by the Hohokam people how lived in the Gila River Valley between 300 C.E. and 1350 C.E.  It is one of the largest prehistoric structures ever built in North America.

Shopping:

Chandler Fashion Center  Located just 6.3 miles from the hotel, Chandler Fashion Center is the second largest shopping center in the Phoenix metro area. There are more than 180 stores and five anchors: Nordstrom, Macy's, Dillard's, Sears and Harkins Theatre.

Scottsdale Fashion Square  Fashion Square is the largest shopping mall in Arizona and the premiere shopping destination in Phoenix.  Anchors include: Barneys of New York, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Macy's and Dillard's.

Biltmore Fashion Park  Biltmore Fashion Park is an outdoor luxury shopping plaza.  Located in the prestigious Biltmore District, major stores include: Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy's and Ralph Lauren.  The Biltmore is also known for its upscale restaurants.

Arizona Mills Mall  Arizona Mills is a mix of traditional retailers and outlet stores.  There are over 170 stores and restaurants located here.
